ChatGPT Search
ChatGPT Search is OpenAI’s live web retrieval inside ChatGPT. It is a different beast from “what GPT remembers about you.”
Turn browsing on and ChatGPT behaves more like Perplexity: fetch, cite, hedge. Turn it off and you are arguing with training data. GEO programs that only sample the memory mode miss the search mode, and vice versa.
Crawlers differ. GPTBot trains. OAI-SearchBot fetches for search. ChatGPT-User hits your site because a human asked it to open a page. Blocking one and allowing another is a real decision.
Bing used to be the quiet backbone. That dependency has loosened, but Bing visibility is still a hint, not a law.
Examples
- A prompt about a product launched last week: Search mode cites the launch post. Memory mode invents last year’s SKU. Track both.
- You block GPTBot “to protect content” and leave SearchBot open. Training will lag. Search might still cite you. Know which outcome you wanted.

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s consumer assistant. For GEO, it is both a memory of the web and, with Search, a live retrieval product.
Training bots build weights. Search/citation bots fetch for an answer now. User-triggered bots fetch because a human asked.
OpenAI runs several bots: GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search, and ChatGPT-User for user-triggered fetches.
RAG means the model looks up documents at answer time instead of relying only on what it memorized in training.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT Search use Bing? +
It has. Treat the retrieval stack as something OpenAI can change. Optimize for being fetchable and citable, not for one partner forever.
Should I allow ChatGPT-User? +
If you want people to “open this page in ChatGPT,” yes. It is user-initiated, not a training crawl. Log it separately.
