Query fan-out
Query fan-out is when one user question becomes many internal searches. You might get cited for a sub-query you never targeted.
Google has talked about this for AI Mode. Other engines do it quietly. “Best CRM for dentists in Ohio” fans out into CRM reviews, dental software, and local results.
Your page can win a fan-out arm even if it would lose the original head term. That is an argument for topical coverage, not one mega-article.
Examples
- A user asks Gemini for a stroller. Fan-out pulls safety recalls, Reddit parent threads, and a retailer listing. You only optimized the listing. The recall page is what got quoted.

Intensive retrieval: many sub-queries and reranks. Similar idea to Deep Research, different product names.
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search UI: Gemini plus fan-out, more chat than a single Overview box.
The need under the query. “Best CRM” may mean “won’t embarrass me in a demo” or “has a free plan.” Fan-out tries to guess this.
RAG means the model looks up documents at answer time instead of relying only on what it memorized in training.
