Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google’s generated summaries on the results page. They sit above the links and eat clicks.

If you still brief SEO as “win position one,” Overviews changed the job. The user may read a paragraph, tap a cited domain, or bounce satisfied. You can be invisible in the Overview and still rank #1 underneath.

Overviews pull from the search index, Knowledge Graph, and whatever Google’s Gemini stack wants that day. Classic SEO still feeds them. So do forums. Reddit URLs appear when the query is opinion-shaped (“is X worth it”).

Impressions in Search Console are not the same as Overview citations. Do not celebrate a traffic drop as “we’re in the AI box” unless you checked.

Examples

  • Query: “best standing desk for apartments.” Overview lists three brands and a Reddit thread. Organic #1 is a roundup that did not get cited.
  • A medical YMYL query shows a cautious Overview with health-site citations. Your blog post ranking #2 is ignored. Correct, honestly.

FAQ

Are Overviews the same as SGE? +

SGE was the experiment. Overviews are the shipped feature. Same family.

How do I get cited? +

Be the page that already deserved a snippet: direct answer, evidence, entity clarity. Then hope Google’s selector likes you. There is no official “Overview keyword tool.”
