Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
GEO is the work of getting your brand named, quoted, or linked when an AI engine answers a question — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, or Google AI Overviews.
Classic SEO still cares about ranks and clicks. GEO cares about whether the model mentions you at all. A user can leave ChatGPT without visiting your site and still pick a vendor. If the answer skipped you, you lost the shortlist.
People mix GEO up with Answer Engine Optimization. AEO is the older phrase from featured snippets and voice. GEO is the same job after the engines started writing paragraphs instead of ten blue links. The tactics overlap. The scoreboard does not: you track mentions, citations, and sentiment, not just position.
Retrieval is messy. Models pull parametric memory from training, then bolt on live search. Reddit threads, review sites, docs, and news all compete. Reddit shows up a lot because the prose is specific, dated, and argumentative — useful when a model needs a human-sounding take. That is why a quiet week on r/yourcategory can still change what Perplexity says next month.
What actually moves GEO is boring: a clear entity (one name, one site), pages that answer the question in the first screen, sources other people already trust, and content that is not a clone of the SERP. Schema helps machines parse you. It does not magically get you cited.
Start measurement with a fixed prompt set. Run the same buying and comparison questions across engines. Count brand inclusion, whether a URL appears, and whether the take is fair. Reddex splits that into AI visibility and Reddit visibility because the two feeds each other.
A GEO week that only ships blog posts is usually a miss. Look at the citation list first. If Perplexity’s proof is a G2 row and a Reddit wiki, your next hour belongs there. If ChatGPT Search never fetches /docs, open robots.txt before you hire another writer.
Politics sneak in. Blocking training bots while wanting to “be in ChatGPT’s memory” is a contradiction. Allowing every scraper while hiding prices behind a demo form is another. Write the policy down: which bots, which URLs, which facts must stay public.
You will not win every prompt. Pick the ten questions that sit next to a contract. Lose the vanity “what is [acronym]” set unless you sell the acronym. Report engine by engine. Averaging ChatGPT ghosts with Perplexity footnotes produces a number nobody can act on.
Examples
- A project-management SaaS tracks “best tools for remote standup notes.” ChatGPT names three rivals and a Reddit thread from r/productivity. None of those pages are the brand’s homepage. The GEO job is to earn a mention in that answer, not to rank #1 for a head term they already own.
- A skincare brand publishes a methods page with lab numbers. Perplexity cites it once. Then a skeptical r/SkincareAddiction comment dunks on the claim. Later answers hedge. The GEO problem is the thread, not the schema.
- An agency reports “we did GEO” because they added FAQ blocks. Citation rate did not move. The prompts were generic (“what is GEO”). Nobody in the buying committee asks that. The prompt set was wrong.
- A founder answers a comparison thread with a real limitation of their product. Two months later Claude quotes that caveat. Honest Reddit copy sometimes becomes the model’s memory of you.

AI visibility is how often, how fairly, and how prominently models mention your brand when people ask category questions.
AEO is structuring content so an answer engine can lift a clean response — featured snippets, voice, and now chat surfaces that skip the blue-link list.
llms.txt is a Markdown file at the site root that tells AI crawlers what the site is and which pages to read first. It is not a second robots.txt with legal teeth.
Prompt tracking is running a fixed set of real customer questions through AI engines on a schedule and logging who got named.
Reddit citations are when an AI answer points at a thread or comment as evidence. They are one of the loudest unofficial ranking factors in consumer categories.
Share of Model is your brand’s share of mentions in AI answers versus a defined competitor set, on a defined prompt set.
FAQ
Is GEO just SEO with a new name? +
No. You still need crawlable pages and a coherent site. GEO adds a different outcome: inclusion in generated answers, often with no click. Ranking #3 on Google does not mean ChatGPT will name you.
Do I need llms.txt to do GEO? +
llms.txt is a nice signal and a convenient Markdown map of your site. Treat it as hygiene, not a ranking lever. Most citation wins still come from third-party pages and Reddit, not from a root text file.
How long until I see movement? +
Live retrieval can pick up a new page in days. Training-memory changes take much longer and you do not control the clock. Watch week-over-week prompt runs, not a single lucky answer.
Where does Reddit fit? +
Reddit is often the evidence layer. Models quote threads when they need opinions, gotchas, and “what broke in production.” Ignore it and you only optimize the brochure.
