Analytics Guide

Ghost citation

A ghost citation is when an AI answer names your brand but does not link you. You got the shout, not the click.

This is the default ChatGPT behavior on a lot of prompts. The model is confident enough to name you and lazy about provenance. Analytics then show “direct” traffic from people who heard you in chat.

You cannot fix ghosts with more schema alone. You need a memorable URL, consistent entity, and sources that already link you so retrieval has something to grab.

Reddit ghosts happen too: “people on Reddit like X” with no thread URL. The influence is real. The referral is not. Track both.

Examples

  • Claude lists four CRMs including you. Zero hyperlinks. Sales still hears “ChatGPT recommended you.” That is a ghost.
  • Perplexity names you and links a G2 page instead of your site. Not a ghost — the citation went to a third party. Different fix.

FAQ

Are ghosts bad? +

They are incomplete. Demand-gen still happens. You just cannot prove it in GA without extra work. Measure mentions, then fight for URLs.

How do I attribute ghost-driven visits? +

See zero-click attribution and branded search lift after prompt campaigns. It will never be as clean as a UTM.
